The blockbuster
show, Wicked has gained entry into its 9th year at the magnificent
Apollo Victoria Theatre. The show is an amalgamation of magic, infidelity, peer
pressure and some chartbusting musical numbers. We have seen these themes
several times, still love to watch the show. This is beautifully exhibits the
power of Winnie Holzman’s writing which have been adapted from the Gregory
Maguire’s novel.
The young minds
have been forced to think about some of the major issues disguised in the form
of romantic musical. The blockbuster show, Wicked is entirely different from
the popular Judy Garland’s movie Wizard of the Oz. There is no similarity in
both the works. The style, feel and intent of the award winning show is
completely different from the Wizard of the Oz.
Wicked is the
saga of friendship between Glinda and Elphaba who have completely different
backgrounds. The narrative of Wicked is propelled with question of what
establishes good and bad. The show also has various Oz characters such as ion,
Tinman, Scarecrow, Flying Monkeys, Munchkins, and, of course, the Wizard.
New characters
are also introduced which successfully have their contributions in
manipulations, scheming, Flying monkeys and Wizards. Wicked London is wowing the
audience in Broadway from the last one decade and seems to touch this landmark
in London too. Stephen Schwartz’s memorable scores make the show a memorable
experience. The spectacular production of Wicked is in its best and also the
finest incarnation amongst the all. The Ensemble is stunning with brilliant
production of thrilling vocal harmonies as well as effective along with there
is disciplined picture of stage as well as dance routines.
With sharp
lighting by Kenneth Posner, fresh costumes by Susan Hilferty and crisp sound by
Tony Meola, the production seems in its ninth week not ninth year. Another
major highlight of the blockbuster show is the outstanding performances of the
cast. Savannah Stevenson in the portrayal of both Galinda and Glinda is
remarkable. The current star cast of Wicked is in its best form and shape and
gives complete value and justice to the role they are portraying.
